Whatever you are - be a good one. -Abraham Lincoln

Today I read a post on another blog that reminded me of the blessed journey of self discovery that I have been on and why I should share it on my own blog.  First thing we need to do is rewind the clock a few years.

Mike graduated from BYU in the year 2003 and in 2004 we bought a four bedroom, formal living and dining, 2400 sq ft house.  It was lovely and big and on the end of a pretty street.  And it was a mess.  I went from living in tiny apartments with one child to having two children and 9 rooms and 3 bathrooms to keep clean and beautified.  I was 25 years old and overwhelmed - so quickly it unraveled into a mess and me into depression.

Elijah and Andrew in 2006.

I tried everything to make myself into a perfect housewife.  I read books on order and organization, I had my super clean friends come over and try to teach me skills, I made charts and lists galore, I read "fly lady" - I even tried medications.  Sadly,  NONE of them worked for longer than a week.  I'd feel hopeful and then something would happen, a trip, a party, a sickness, anything - and it would all fall through.  And it hurt my feelings - I was ashamed.  Just as my mother was ashamed when her house was messy as so many women across the world are.  Also though, to address some of my shame we should go back even further.

In high school I had a crush on a boy - many boys really - but this one was particularly powerful and one day while hanging out I said something about how my house was going to be clean when I grew up and he started to laugh - a deep side splitting belly laugh - and he said, "Megan, your house will NEVER be clean!"  I was mortified.  What boy would want to marry a girl if he already believed she'd be a terrible housewife?  So I became determined to prove him wrong - I was sure I could.  And I didn't forget that promise that I made to myself.  So once I became a wife with a house - every week that passed I knew that he was the one who was right - somehow he knew that I would be messy.  I was horrified that "messy slob" must be written all over me without me knowing it.  I was so embarrassed.

I can't tell you how many of those nights I cried to my husband about how I was given talents but all of them lay outside of the realm of what gives wives and mothers worth and value. That he must be disapointed to find that his wife couldn't clean and keep house. I felt so broken and I felt hurt that the Lord would play that trick on me. I longed to be like my mother in law who was the perfect housewife.  I didn't want to be "creative" - I wanted to be CLEAN!!!

And then something big happened.  I was telling my lovely friend Sarah Moyar that I just couldn't seem to keep my house clean and Sarah said very confidently, "I'm not organized, I'm vivacious!"  It was the first time I had heard a wife and mother speak placing so little of her worth on the cleanliness of her home.  She was freed from the guilt and shame that plagues so many of us.  She gave herself permission to have talents other than cleaning and organizing and in that moment she gave me that permission too.  I didn't feel better overnight but it was a new idea to me - a tiny spark in my head that I pondered on and continued to explore over the next several years.

When Mike and I moved from that house we moved to College Station and met a lot of other couples our age with lots of little ones to take care of.  And a few times I dropped by their houses unexpectedly and saw that their houses looked just as trashed as mine!  Perhaps I should be a little easier on myself.  Perhaps not all of us became expert housewives overnight.

But perhaps the thing that had the greatest impact was taking a personality test from a book I recommend ALL of you get called, "Please Understand Me II".  In my personality type it said that I'd be terrible at keeping a house clean.  I kind of hated that and was a little embarrassed until I realized I was looking at it wrong - it DID say I wasn't much of an organized person but it ALSO listed all of the things I WAS good at.   Why bury those things in the ground and try to multiply something that isn't there?  The Lord made me the way he did and would be upset with me if I came back to him and hadn't multiplied what he gave ME.  Think of the parable:
And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo,there thou hast that is thine.
His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
I now know that if I were to keep spinning my wheels trying to become like the lady next door instead of being like myself I too would have to say to the Lord, "I was afraid that I was made wrong so I went and hid my natural abilities in the earth and tried to be someone else."  Not only would I never be like her but my family and the world would also lose out on what I am good at.  And there is so much more to being a wife and mother than cleaning.  I can't clean very well but I can believe in you and support you till the ends of the earth.  I can't keep on schedule but I can teach you the beauty of the world we live in and how to never stop exploring and learning.  I can't see when the floor needs to be mopped but I can see the good in others and what makes them unique.  And you know what?  My house has gotten cleaner because the guilt has left.  I am more in control of my life and my path.  And I'm more willing to celebrate those clean women - they are gifted in ways I never will be.  But I in turn am gifted in other ways they never will be.  Does the rose look jealously at the lily and vice versa?  No, we need all sorts of flowers and people.    I'll finish with another really beautiful quote from Joseph B. Wirthlin:

The Lord did not people the earth with a vibrant orchestra of personalities only to value the piccolos of the world. Every instrument is precious and adds to the complex beauty of the symphony. All of Heavenly Father’s children are different in some degree, yet each has his own beautiful sound that adds depth and richness to the whole.
This variety of creation itself is a testament of how the Lord values all His children. He does not esteem one flesh above another, but He “inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness; and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female; … all are alike unto God.”

Sunday will come.

Happy Easter, everyone!  I wanted to share a bookmark I made for the young women at church for my Easter handout.  Let's all remember what the holiday is about - that no matter how deep you feel you've gone - the light of Christ always shines bright enough to reach you.

The free printable has four to a page.  I print mine on heavyweight glossy stock - it feels and looks so pretty.

Drinking Pickle Juice.

I'm so grateful for conference.  It comes so quickly now that I'm older and it's a good thing because it brings with it the gift of renewing and recharging my spiritual self.  There are so many memorable quotes from the weekend but of course, Elder Holland's remarks on envy where apt for any of us.  So, I made a little sign to hang and remind me of them.
The amazing talk can be found here.

Also, I'm looking into resurrecting my etsy shop.  I just need to bet to printing on my own instead of where I used to print.  Any thoughts?  Worth the investment?  (I'm obviously fishing for support for my ego.)

If you're not using essential oils, why you should be.

What?  Essential oils?  Like olive oil?  Something you eat/cook with/grease things with?  Speaking of which, are they greasy?  Will it stain my clothes?

I know by now you've heard me mention essential oils on here but probably lots of you still have no idea what I'm talking about!

FIRST OFF, WHAT THE HECK ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils are the oils from plants - flowers, trees, leaves, stems, roots, peels or seeds.  Here is a peppermint leaf magnified so you can see the oils sacs on it:
The oils of a plant are where any of it's medicinal or therapeutic benefits reside.  Probably most of us have heard that lavender helps with relaxation - and the part of the lavender plant that does that is in the oil of the plant.  And when you distill the oil from the plant it becomes as much as 70 times more potent than using that plant alone!  For instance, one DROP of peppermint essential oil is as much as 28 cups or more of peppermint tea!

Also, when I say "Essential Oils" I mean not just one type of oil but endless amounts of oils such as:

Lemon
Lavender
Peppermint
Melaleuca or Tea Tree
Oregano
Ginger
Cinnamon
Frankincense
Wild Orange
Bergamot
Clove
Patchouli
White Fir
Grapefruit
Myrrh
Basil
Clary Sage
Fennel
Coriander
Cypress
Geranium
Helichrysum
Wintergreen
Marjoram
Vetiver
Ylang Ylang
Thyme

Get the point?  There are endless amounts of oils and so many of them have powerful benefits.

Ok, SO WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ME?!

Well, if you ever have allergies, stomach aches, head aches, burns, cuts, wounds, injuries, back aches, colds, flu, infections, rashes, acne, depression or anxiety, sleep disorders, irritable bowel, or ANYTHING else wrong with you, you can count of mother nature to have a remedy!

REALLY?  WHY DO ESSENTIAL OILS WORK?

I'd bet most of you believe that plants have medicinal benefits.  In fact, most traditional pharmaceuticals began when scientists noticed that certain plants had abilities to heal certain things.  They then took those plants into the lab, isolated what they believed was the chemical constituent in the plant that was helping and then manufactured a synthetic version of it.   And while I am SO grateful for the miracle of modern medicine, there are problems with doing that.  Don't believe me that there are problems?    They're called SIDE EFFECTS and you see them all the time on all those happy TV ads.  They range from excessive sweating to headaches to hallucinations and even death.

High quality, properly distilled essential oils have up for 1000 known constituents in them - probably even more that we haven't discovered yet!  And EACH of those constituents has medicinal benefits on its own so essential oils are POWERFUL remedies.  And they work FAST!  I can have a stomach ache from eating too many pieces of pizza and after applying an oil directly to my belly, I feel better within 60 seconds.  Crazy, isn't it?

IS THIS VOO-DOO?

No - essential oils are rising in popularity and usage - in fact, Primary Children's Hospital in Utah just hired an essential oil expert to be a part of their staff to help them incorporate their use in their hospitals.   Why would they DO that?!  Well, not only have people been using essential oils for thousands of years but in the past couple of decades science has really started to figure out why they are so powerful and there are new studies coming out ALL OF THE TIME proving that.

ALRIGHT,  WHAT ELSE?

Essential oils are amazing - they work quickly, effectively, and with no side effects.  Plus - you can use them safely on your whole family including brand spanking new babies!  So, imagine a world where you rarely have to visit the doctor because you can proactively treat just about anything at home.  But guess what - it's not something I have to imagine - we treat everything with essential oils - every.single.day.  I would truly be unable to live without them and because of that we are healthier than we've EVER been - EVER.  While the rest of you are spending weeks waiting for a nasty cold to make it's way through your family - it's likely we didn't even get it.  And if one of us does happen to get sick, we're over it in a day or two without getting the rest of the family sick.  Amazing, isn't it?

I could REALLY go on for a long long time but that's not really appropriate for a blog post so I won't.  You know what it IS appropriate for?  A class or a webinar.  I'm teaching free classes all over the country all of the time - next weekend I'm teaching one in Spokane, the week after that I'll be teaching three in Texas.  BUT if you don't happen to live in any of those areas you can jump on our weekly webinars - every Thursday night. We go over the basics including which oils to use for what.  There are also giveaways so you can get some oils in your hands for  FREE!   Click here to register for the next webinar!  PS - it's free and open to anyone!

Ok, so this is kind of a part one on this topic - next I'll be talking about how essential oils are not even close to being created equal - in fact some brands are downright dangerous and toxic.  That's super important so if you're thinking of embracing a more natural healthcare then you must check back on that!  I choose to not only use but sell doTERRA's oils because their quality and safety are unrivaled.

Also, are you so interested in learning about essential oils that you think you'd like to teach classes on them and help others find out about them?  It's amazingly rewarding(even financially - check out these monthly numbers).  If you're feeling that way - totally email me and we can start talking about how that works!

PS - No, they aren't greasy and they won't stain your clothes, but you can eat and cook with them!

Love Garland.

Since I still had my Christmas garland hanging on the fireplace I knew it was time for a change.  I looked through pinterest for inspiration and found this one.  I liked the idea but needed something longer so I changed it up a bit - taking a line from the Beatles - and voila - here's my new garland!

I printed out the letters on card stock, cut them out, spread them with glue, and poured on the glitter.  I let them dry, hot glued them to some ribbon and hung them up!

And then I decided that the scaling on my fireplace wasn't right so I moved them to the window.  They're a Valentine's theme but I imagine they'll be up a lot longer than that! ;)

The Dress.

This September the company I work for, doTERRA, will be having their annual convention and at the end they have a gala where they award people who hit certain ranks.  And I want Mike and I to be getting one of those awards.  It's pretty great - they have a red carpet to walk down and people line it and cheer.  You choose the song that will play and you get to dress up.  Part of envisioning myself there is choosing the song and the DRESS.   Here are some dresses that inspire me:

First off, Mike and I saw "The Artist" a couple weekends ago and every shred of clothing in that was beautiful.  Not that having Berenice Bejo wearing them hurt at all.

Hair that makes you want to chop yours off.

Prettiest woman alive.

The dress that hasn't left me.
This last dress just won't leave my brain.  It was so beautifully beaded and sparkly with that perfect fat ribbon around the middle.  Ok, so those dresses are in a movie and not something I can walk into Dillards and buy.  Here are two dresses that are actually for sale that I would die for:

This dress is amazing.  But it's just a little over $800 dollars.  So, it's not for me.

This next dress totally hits the spot for me - the silver one.  I L-O-V-E it.  But it's like a bazillion dollars.  Out of the question.

So, perhaps I could make one?  As of now, my sewing skills are sub-par for this dress BUT I could get better by the end of the summer.  This pattern look like with some alterations it would work:

I'd do the black one on the bottom right with not such a high slit and add cap sleeves.  I like the idea of it being long - it's dressier.  AND it's an easy sew one.  This pattern might work too:

The only draw back on this one is the ruching.  I couldn't wear a belt with it like I'd like to.  I don't HAVE TO wear a belt...I just like the idea of the ribbon belt thing.

Anyhow, getting the award would not only allow me to get a dress but would also be seriously helpful in bringing Pearl home.  It would mean my income level was high enough to replace Mike's income plus some.  So, say a little(or big) prayer that we make it!

And if you haven't seen "The Artist" yet here's the trailer:
